Chattanooga is a city full of history and vibrant culture. It is proud to be home to the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, a place that brings the city’s story to life. This iconic museum, named after talented blues singer, Bessie Smith, is a vital hub in Chattanooga for celebrating African American heritage and showcasing the diverse talents of musicians from Chattanooga and beyond.
A Legacy of Cultural Celebration: The Bessie Smith Cultural Center
Founded in Chattanooga in 1983 as the Chattanooga African American Museum, the center’s mission was to highlight the significant contributions of African Americans to the city’s development. In 1996, it expanded to include the Bessie Smith Performance Hall, a state-of-the-art venue where they preserve and promote musical traditions.
The center has become a platform for various musical genres, including blues, jazz, soul, R&B, country, and contemporary. This side of the museum allows pictures and showcases local artists, sharing their unique styles and sounds.
Partnering to Provide Free Access for All
The Cultural Center is committed to telling diverse stories and displaying rich culture, serving Chattanooga communities by partnering with many organizations, one being the TVFCU. Through the partnerships, admission to the museum is free on the first Thursday of every month. Easy accessibility for every patron and free admission make it a no-brainer to learn some culture about Chattanooga and enjoy the atmosphere they have created.
Immersive Exhibits and Inclusive Experiences
The museum has a private section where no photos are allowed. This part of the museum takes you through Native and African American life, legacy, and culture local to the area. Housing artifacts, photographs, and amazing exhibits, this center helps to tell the story of what African Americans have experienced in Chattanooga throughout the years.
Whether you are a music lover, a history buff, or are looking to experience Chattanooga’s vibrant culture, the Bessie Smith Cultural Center is a must-visit place. Its dedication to preserving the past while nurturing the future of music makes it a true Chattanooga gem.
