As IRONMAN celebrates its 10th year in Chattanooga, TN, the Chattanooga Tourism Co. has partnered with local artist Isaac Duncan to create a unique medal that honors the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. This unique commemorative piece not only captures the spirit of IRONMAN athletes but also highlights key elements of Chattanooga’s landscape and rich heritage. 

Isaac Duncan, a renowned sculptor, operates his Tennessee-based studio, Duncan Sculpture & Services, where he specializes in large-scale projects and custom fabrication. Living and working in Chattanooga, Duncan was the ideal choice to craft this special medal for the anniversary event. His design thoughtfully incorporates symbols of the city’s past, present, and future, creating a lasting tribute to both the athletes and the community. 

The design of the medal draws inspiration from Chattanooga’s iconic landmarks. “The Hunter Museum is one of Chattanooga’s defining features,” explains Duncan. “It stands on the bluff overlooking the river and is a landmark for competitors as they swim, bike, and run past.” This striking architectural element is a key visual in the medal, representing the cultural heritage of the city. 

Another standout element in the design is Lookout Mountain, a natural marvel beloved by locals. Duncan describes it as “Mother Nature’s sculpture,” symbolizing the beauty and history embedded in Chattanooga’s landscape.  

To the side of the design is a tribute to the region’s indigenous peoples, represented by a red feather. “We must remember the Native American tribes, such as the Muskogee, Cherokee, and Yuchi, who shaped this land long before us,” Duncan reflects. “Honoring those who came before us is a key part of civilization.” 

Finally, the music note shape of the medal is a nod to the African diasporic communities whose contributions to the American story, especially through the arts, continue to resonate today. “Chattanooga’s history and culture are shaped by the diverse people who have passed through and continue to influence this city,” says Duncan. 

This artist collaboration not only commemorates a decade of IRONMAN in Chattanooga but also stands as a meaningful tribute to the city’s history, nature, and people. The 10th-anniversary medal represents more than just an athletic achievement—it is a work of art deeply intertwined with Chattanooga’s enduring legacy.
