Planning a day trip or weekend getaway to Chattanooga but hoping to keep it easy on your wallet? We've rounded up some of the best budget-friendly things to do around town so you can explore, unwind, and make the most of your visit on any budget.

Morning: Riverwalk & Attractions

Start your day with a scenic stroll along the Tennessee Riverwalk, one of Chattanooga’s most beloved outdoor trails. This 16-mile path winds along the river, connecting downtown to neighborhoods like St. Elmo and beyond. Along the way, you’ll spot public art, river views, and plenty of local cafés for a quick bite. Parking is easy to find, and a free electric shuttle can take you back when you’re ready to rest—see our Transportation FAQs for details.

Follow the Riverwalk toward Coolidge Park, home to open green spaces, fountains, and a century-old antique carousel (just $1 to ride!). From there, stroll across the iconic Walnut Street Bridge, one of the world’s longest pedestrian bridges, for sweeping views of the Tennessee River and downtown skyline.

Continue on to the Hunter Museum of American Art, perched on the bluff overlooking the river, where you can enjoy both world-class exhibits and discounted admission on select days. Or, head the opposite direction along the Riverwalk to St. Elmo and hop aboard the Incline Railway for breathtaking views from the top of Lookout Mountain.

Midday: Cheap Eats & Scenic Spots

By midday, you’ve probably worked up an appetite—luckily, Chattanooga’s got plenty of delicious options that won’t break the bank.

If you’re on the NorthShore, grab a table at Taco Mamacita for fresh Tex-Mex favorites, Milk & Honey for coffee, sandwiches, and homemade gelato, or Totto Sushi & Grill for their crowd-favorite all-you-can-eat sushi and hot bar. Each spot is just a short walk from the Walnut Street Bridge, making it easy to enjoy a tasty lunch before exploring more of the area.

Prefer something a little more artsy? Take the Riverwalk to the Bluff View Art District, where Rembrandt’s Coffee House serves up locally roasted coffee, pastries, and light bites with a view, or sit down for a classic Italian meal at Tony’s Pasta Shop & Trattoria. Surrounded by sculpture gardens, river overlooks, and cobblestone paths, it’s the perfect place to slow down and savor the charm.

Afternoon: Riverfront Fun

In the afternoon, soak in more of what makes Chattanooga special. Coolidge Park and the Riverfront often host free events, outdoor concerts, or pop-up markets, especially in the warmer months. If you’re in town during a festival, you’ll find live music, food vendors, and plenty of free entertainment happening around the Riverfront.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Chattanooga offers endless ways to explore. The Scenic City is surrounded by more than 50 hiking trails within a 30-minute drive, from easy riverside walks to challenging mountain climbs with panoramic views. Prefer to stay closer to downtown? Rent a bike through Bike Chattanooga, the city’s public bike share program, and cruise along the Tennessee Riverwalk or through the vibrant Southside. If you’re drawn to the water, rent a kayak or paddleboard from local outfitters like L2 Outside who offer easy access points along the downtown riverfront.

Evening: Drinks, Dinner & Dancing

Looking for some vibrant nightlife, great drinks, and good vibes? Head to the Southside, where you’ll find some of Chattanooga’s most popular hangouts like Oddstory Brewing, FEED Co. Table & Tavern, and State of Confusion—each serving up delicious food, local brews & cocktails, and plenty of atmosphere.

If you’re in the mood for bar-hopping, make your way down to Station Street, right by the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo. Fun fact: it’s the only street in Chattanooga where you can legally drink outside! Like Goldilocks, you can find the perfect bar to match your vibe—whether it’s Western flair at Westbound Honky Tonk, retro dance beats at Reagan’s Retro Bar, or cool punk music at The Boneyard Bar. For something a little more laid-back, pop inside the Choo Choo to 50/50 Wine Bar for craft cocktails.
