Sometimes the best way to experience a city is on foot. Walking lets you slow down, take in the sights and sounds, and even cut down your carbon footprint. Chattanooga is compact enough to explore this way, yet full of places worth discovering over a long weekend. This handy three-day itinerary covers some of the best things to do without ever needing to get behind the wheel!
Day 1: Downtown Chattanooga
Morning
Start your Chattanooga weekend trip along the Tennessee River. Grab a coffee or take a private roasting class at Rembrandt’s, then head to the Tennessee Aquarium. From there, you can walk to the Walnut Street Bridge in under ten minutes for some of the best views around. And if you want to explore a bit further, you can always rent a bike from Bike Chattanooga and follow the Tennessee Riverwalk.
Afternoon
Take the free electric shuttle from the Aquarium area to City Center for lunch at one of the spots inside Warehouse Row.
Afterwards, hop back on the shuttle and head to the Creative Discovery Museum if you’re traveling with kids, or the Hunter Museum of American Art. Both are easy to reach on foot! Or, if you’d rather spend time outdoors, Ross’s Landing is just a short walk from here. You can sit and watch the boats sail by or catch a free concert at the amphitheater (spring and summer).
Evening
In the evening, follow the Riverwalk back toward West Village. There are multiple photo opportunities in West Village with small art installations and Umbrella Alley. For dinner, try Easy Bistro & Bar or Old Gilman Grill. Afterward, head to the Westin's rooftop bar, Paloma, and enjoy the views. Then, catch some Z's at one of our many Downtown Chattanooga hotels.
Day 2: Northshore and the Riverwalk
Morning
Start your day with breakfast at Milk & Honey, then walk a few steps over to Coolidge Park. The park’s fountain, restored antique carousel, and river views are all plenty of reasons to visit! Afterwards, hop on a bike and ride over to Renaissance Park, it’s only about a quarter of a mile away and great for birdwatching or just admiring nature.
Afternoon
After lunch at Taco Mamacita, spend the afternoon exploring Northshore’s cluster of small shops and galleries, all within easy walking distance. Verre Noir is a good first stop for indie perfume, vintage trinkets, and all things spooky, followed by Locals Only Gifts, where everything sold is made by Chattanooga-based artists. Nearby, I Go Tokyo offers a playful mix of Japanese stationery, gifts, and collectibles, while In-Town Gallery showcases work by regional artists across painting, jewelry, and mixed media. And don’t forget to swing by Almanac Supply Co. for thoughtfully curated home goods, crystals, and candles that reflect the city’s creative energy.
Evening
As evening sets in, you have a couple of great options depending on how far you want to roam. Staying in Northshore, Frazier Five & Dime offers a fun, creative dinner menu paired with standout cocktails. Totto Sushi & Grill is another excellent nearby option, known for its quality rolls and relaxed atmosphere (and a very popular all-you-can-eat lunch if you want to plan ahead).
If you’re up for exploring another neighborhood, the Southside is just a short walk, shuttle ride, or quick Uber away. There, STIR is a go-to for oysters and craft cocktails, followed by a stop at the Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery to sample locally made spirits and cap off the night.
Day 3: Southside
Morning
Start your final day in one of the most colorful parts of the city. Grab brunch at Bluegrass Grill or Frothy Monkey, both just steps from the Chattanooga Choo Choo. This historic train terminal is now home to Hotel Chalet, Gate 11 Distillery, a few restaurants, The Comedy Catch, and a couple of shops. They often hold markets and other events in their garden.
Although biking or driving is often the easiest way to get there, a visit to Sculpture Fields at Montague Park is well worth it. The sprawling outdoor space pairs massive metal sculptures with sweeping mountain views, making it one of Chattanooga’s coolest places to explore.
Afternoon
Make your way back toward Main Street and take a stroll through the Southside, where colorful murals cover nearly every block. You’ll find abstract works, large-scale portraits, and local tributes painted across old brick buildings.
Then, grab a bite at FEED Co. Table & Tavern or Conga Latin Food. If you’re here on a Sunday, swing by the Chattanooga Market for produce, crafts, and live music.
Pro Tip: If your feet need a break, the free shuttle runs regularly between Chattanooga’s Southside and Downtown.
Evening
On your final night, treat yourself to something extra special. Start with happy hour at Five Wits Brewing Company, then walk a few blocks to Station Street. You can catch a show at The Comedy Catch or a concert at The Signal. And end the night with dinner at Elsie’s Daughter.
